Love Yourself

There are plenty of self-help books out there that will tell you that you need to love yourself. It’s true, there’s no doubt about that—loving yourself is essential. There is a clear difference in how a person with self-love leads their life and how a person with low self-esteem goes through life.

Self-love is essential for four main reasons.

Firstly and most importantly, it keeps you happy. Those with abundant self-love are inclined to make decisions that benefit themselves; they prioritize their happiness.

Secondly, self-love serves as a motivation to achieve health goals. When you love yourself, you take the necessary steps to look after yourself; this includes working towards living healthily.

Thirdly, it protects you against mental health issues. People who love themselves tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life as opposed to those who let their worries weigh them down.

Lastly, it helps you push-back against adversity. Life has its ups and downs. There are people who become hopeless and give up and there are those that pull themselves up. People who love themselves are a part of the latter category.

So now that we know self-love is crucial for our well-being, how exactly do we practice it?

1) Learn to care for yourself

What does that mean exactly? Think of how you speak to a child or your loved ones when they’re looking for your support. We’re usually very careful with our words. We tell them to focus on the positives. We remind them of all their strengths and tell them they’re not alone. We make sure they don’t give up.

This little pep-talk is what you need to give yourself every time you feel down in the dumps. Be your own cheerleader and see how things turn around for you.

2) Be aware of your boundaries

Each one of us has emotional needs. We want to be listened to, treated with respect, cared for and loved. When we don’t get this from others, we feel hurt and neglected. But instead of letting others know that they are at fault; people with low self-esteem continue to let people mistreat them at the expense of their self-worth.

As someone who is on the road to self-love, you need to stop people from hurting you. Set boundaries for others; if they behave in a way that hurts you, you have the right to remove yourself from the situation or the relationship as you see fit.

This is most significant amongst couples where one partner’s needs are constantly overlooked. In this case, either the couple should take steps to actively solve their issues through relationship counselling or choose to end the relationship and part ways.

3) Do what makes you happy

It sounds simple but it has a lasting impact. Each day, make it a point to do something that gives you pleasure. This could be anything you want. It can be a hobby of some sort, spending time with old friends, volunteering or indulging in a spa session. Get into the habit of doing things that make you smile.

By doing all these things regularly, you’ll build up on self-esteem and feel a sense of pride—something we all need! There are people out there that will provide you with support but it needs to come from you first. Only when you love yourself, will you achieve true happiness.
