Scott Peck wrote a book a while ago called The Road Less Traveled. This book suggested to me that the person who undergoes psychotherapy is likely to be quite a bit different from those who do not. While I am surely biased, this concept makes sense to me.
My Process
First of all, I want a good initial impression of who I will be working with. I insist on a 15 minute initial telephone interview. This serves people well in getting to know my energy and expectations.
Then there is the usual paperwork process of HIPPA, privacy, and a page for presenting symptoms, life events, and medications.
After this, I have my first meeting with the client. I like to go over the paperwork quickly, just see what is said in their introduction. I want to make it clear that I can just listen, or I can ask questions that lead to deeper and deeper levels of introspection. I love this part of the psychotherapy work. My goal and desire for this process is for it to be interactive as opposed to my being rather silent. However, silence can at times be golden.
I can also offer vignettes that provide information or insights; I consider this psycho-educational. Most clients/patients love this as it offers them guidance when they feel quite stuck.
I frequently check to see if the process is the right mix; to ask my client/patient to check in further with themselves. This enhances the frequency of introspection.
How I Work
I like being a part of the enlivening process. This is rejuvenating for both of us.
I also conduct a lot of dreamwork, which I’ve found to be helpful in many ways.
I will frequently check in to see your personal sense of progress, which is another introspection tactic. It’s a great strategy for goal setting, whether general or specific.
I expect this process to last a while. You didn’t get here overnight. I work on a weekly or bi-weekly frequency, depending on each client’s scheduling needs.
I will also be supported by a walker or an electric wheelchair.
I am glad to be a part of my clients/ patients lives. It is well known that therapy success is dependent upon relationship qualities.
